Hangovers vs. A strong focus

aui I had a tough week suffering from severe vacation hangover. Thankfully I am not the type of person to be overwhelmed by a down week. The following weekend I had the good fortune of attending a conference concentrating on knees and lower backs presented by Mike Robertson. Mike’s gym I.F.A.S.T. in Indianapolis was recently named to the top ten list of gyms in America by Men’s Health. Accolades aside, this guy is dang smart. Here are a couple of the main things that I picked up from the weekend that have really stuck:
1) Do not overlook the details.- Normally most clients think I am a bit picky with things, I learned that I have to get myself a finer toothed comb
2) The role of the glutes.
- This was huge, Mike showed us how some of the simplest exercises become difficult as a result of engaging the gluteals thus tidying up the ‘energy leaks’.
3) There are no shortcuts.
- On Sunday I had the opportunity to share lunch with Mike and it was an insightful time in which I gleaned that there was no magic step or lottery that I hadn’t won in order to grow as a trainer and business. I cannot overstate this point enough, put in the time with some good direction, add a ton of effort and the result will be positive.
4) Passion is infectious.
- I could tell Mike loved what he did, and as a result I listened to what he said. If I can grab some of that passion and apply it to my craft, work will continue to not really be work.
This list probably could go on for a while; but you get the point. I sure am glad that I got a copy of the dvd that was recorded from the weekend. I felt as I was comprehending something new, another golden nugget passed by me. Nothing like a little learning to rejuvenate your outlook. Sure Hawaii was fantastic for getting ‘away’ but the classroom has been great for renewing my focus on training and hopefully bringing a fresh look to my clients goals and how I can make them happen.
